How to Layer Skincare Products in the Right Order

How to Layer Skincare Products in the Right Order

You bought the right products. You use them every day. But your skin still looks... the same. Before you blame the formulas, check one thing: the order you apply them in.

Layering matters because skincare works by absorption. A heavy cream applied before a watery serum acts like a lid — it seals the skin and blocks everything layered on top from getting through. Get the order right, and every product in your routine pulls its weight.

The golden rule: thinnest to thickest

Apply products from the lightest, most watery texture to the heaviest, most occlusive one. That single rule gets you 90% of the way there, every morning and night.

Your morning order

1. Cleanser. Start with a clean canvas. In the morning a gentle cleanse removes overnight oil and sweat without stripping — something like Mei Hydrating Facial Cleanser, which cleans without that tight, squeaky feeling.

2. Toner or essence (optional). If you use one, it goes right after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp. Damp skin absorbs the next layers better.

3. Serums — water-based first. This is where most people go wrong. A watery treatment like Mei Glycolic Acid Serum should go on before anything creamy. Serums carry concentrated actives, and they need direct contact with skin to work. If you use two serums, apply the thinner one first.

4. Eye cream. The skin around your eyes is thinner and dries out faster, so give it its own dedicated step before your all-over moisturizer.

5. Moisturizer. Now you seal everything in. Mei Embrace Collagen Moisturizer locks in the hydration and actives from the previous steps and keeps your barrier comfortable all day.

6. Sunscreen — always last (AM only). SPF needs to form an even film over the skin to protect you. Anything applied on top of sunscreen disrupts that film and weakens your protection.

Your evening order

Night is when your skin does its repair work, so this is the time for your strongest actives — with no sun to worry about.

1. First cleanse (oil-based). Melts sunscreen, makeup, and the day off. This is the step most people skip — and the reason their second cleanse never quite works.

2. Second cleanse (water-based). Now your skin is actually clean. A gentle option like Mei Hydrating Facial Cleanser removes impurities without stripping.

3. Exfoliant (2–3 nights a week, not daily). Exfoliating acids like glycolic do their best work on clean skin at night. More is not better — over-exfoliating damages the barrier you're trying to improve.

4. Treatment serum. Night is the time for your hard-working treatments — the ones you'd never wear under sunscreen.

5. Eye cream. Same as morning.

6. Moisturizer. Your skin repairs itself while you sleep — give it something to work with. If you use a face oil, it goes dead last: oils are the most occlusive step of all.

Three mistakes that undo good products

Mixing too many actives at once. Vitamin C, glycolic acid, retinol — all in one routine is a recipe for irritation, not glow. Introduce one active at a time.

Not waiting between steps. You don't need to wait 20 minutes, but give each layer 30–60 seconds to sink in before the next. If your skin still feels wet or slippery, wait a beat.

Applying to bone-dry skin. Slightly damp skin (after cleansing or a mist) absorbs water-based products noticeably better. It's the easiest upgrade in skincare.

The takeaway

You don't need more products — you need the right sequence. Cleanser, watery treatments, eye cream, moisturizer, SPF. Thinnest to thickest, every time. Try it for two weeks and watch your routine finally start paying off.
